We’re on a Mission to Save the Web. Here’s why, and how.

By Nadav Shoval

We’re OpenWeb: a company that’s working to save the internet .

Around 2015, my co-founder Roee Goldberg and I noticed something: the internet was sick.

The social networks and “walled gardens” of Web 2.0 — Facebook, Google, and the like — had promised to bring us closer together and improve our lives. Instead, they became the internet’s version of fossil fuels: powering incredible benefits for our online and offline worlds, while also polluting our environment with their toxic byproducts.

Yes — these tech giants provided us with new abilities to connect, discover new information and content, and create new business opportunities. They’d also contributed to the destruction of our discourse, the damaging of our democracy, and teh destabilization of our media.

In their pursuit of growth, they’d incentivized an online culture of tribalism, toxicity, and hate. They’d undermined journalism and independent publishers right when we needed them most — taking content, data, and users from publishers to grow their own platforms. They had become the new gatekeepers to internet audiences.

We built OpenWeb because it was time to fight back. We’re a technology company with a big mission to create a healthier, more social, more open web. We’re expanding the boundaries of tech, data and AI for the good of everyone — and we’re looking for more passionate, talented people that want to save the internet.

We’re building the “clean energy” powering the open internet

If Social Media “1.0” are the internet’s fossil fuels, OpenWeb’s vision is to be its clean energy: an end-to-end technology and social platform that provides an alternative to the walled gardens, without the negative effects.

That means creating:

  1. The distributed social layer of the web. One of the greatest powers of the internet is its ability to connect people, but online communication was never meant to be controlled by the few. We’re honoring that by building the distributed, AI-powered social layer of the entire internet.
  2. Healthy conversations. At the core of our platform are the real-time conversations we host around the internet. Our tech is designed to facilitate, incentivize, and protect healthy discourse. We create safe environments where people can communicate openly.
  3. A powerful platform for publishers: Content creators and digital publishers are the backbone of the web. We’re helping them thrive by building OpenWebOS — an AI-powered platform for hosting dynamic personalized experiences for their users, get the most out of their data, and generate the revenue their organizations deserve.

Of course — building a platform that shakes up the web isn’t simple.

Within each of the above are countless exciting challenges that our team tackles and conquers every day. We’re continuously developing cutting-edge technology that we deploy across our 100M monthly active users and more than 1,000 publisher partners.

We’re already doing it at scale — and growing fast.

Over the last 5 years, OpenWeb has grown from a scrappy startup into an international, high-growth company with offices in New York City, Tel Aviv, and soon Europe and  Asia. Our team now numbers almost 130, and we’ll be 200 by the end of 2021.

And we’ve been busy. OpenWeb’s technology is now used by most of the major US digital media houses — publishers like Yahoo, IGN, PC Magazine, Engadget, New York Post, Fox, TechCrunch, Refinery29, AOL News, and many more. In the process, we’ve doubled our revenue every year for the last 5 years.

We’re going places together. Join us.

Despite our platform’s comprehensiveness and the quality of our partners, we’re still just getting started. Our vision for creating the distributed social platform that powers the web is in our sights, with a lot more exciting milestones and tech to build along the way.

The most important factor in getting where we’re going is our team.

We do what we do because we love the open web — but also because we’re in it for each other. We work hard, we believe in our mission, and we have fun. We’re passionate about tech, discourse, the web, and collaboration. If that sounds like you, we have plenty of open positions—come join us.

We’re always discovering new ways to improve the web — so if you want to join breaking new ground in tech, data and AI for the good of the web, find a position you’re interested in, send in your resume, and talk to one of our recruiters. We’d love to hear from you.

Let’s have a conversation.
